When Everything Feels Broken

by Torrie Slaughter

There are seasons that don’t feel like peace at all.

They feel like loss.
Like confusion.
Like everything has been turned upside down.

Psalm 79 opens with devastation:
“The nations have invaded your inheritance… they have defiled your holy temple.”

This is not subtle.

This is heartbreak.

And the response is raw, honest prayer:
“How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever?” (verse 5)

This Psalm gives us permission to bring our real emotions before God.

Not polished.
Not filtered.
But honest.

And even in the middle of grief, there is still a thread of hope:

Verse 13 says:
“Then we your people… will praise you forever.”

That’s Jehovah Shalom.

Peace that doesn’t deny pain—
but carries you through it.

Peace that allows you to grieve…
and still believe.

Peace that reminds you:
this is not the end of your story.

Prayer

Lord, in moments when life feels overwhelming, remind me that You are still near. Help me to bring my honest emotions before You and trust that You are working even in the broken places. You are my peace in every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

Are you allowing yourself to be honest with God about what you’re feeling?
