Strength for the Journey—Dwelling in His Presence
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 84 invites us into the sacred space of God's presence—and reminds us that the deepest longing of the human soul is not for success, comfort, or recognition… but for communion with the Creator.
“How lovely is Your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord.”
(Psalm 84:1-2, ESV)
There’s something different about this Psalm—it’s not just poetry, it’s pilgrimage. It speaks to every believer who has ever walked through dry seasons or uphill battles while clinging to God’s presence as the source of their strength. When we talk about claiming the land—it’s not just about possession, it’s about dwelling with the One who owns it all.
“Blessed are those whose strength is in You, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.”
(Psalm 84:5, ESV)
This is the journey of the heart. Whether you feel like you’re on a mountaintop or crawling through a valley, your direction matters more than your pace. The psalmist is clear: God’s presence is the destination, and the process is blessed.
And just when you think you’re running out of strength, here comes the promise:
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
(Psalm 84:11, ESV)
The same God who warms us with His light is also the One who covers us in battle. He is both provision and protection.
🔄 Reflection:
Are you striving for strength in your own ability—or drawing it from time in God’s presence?
What dry place in your life can become a spring when you set your heart on the journey to Zion?
🙏🏾 Prayer:
Lord, we long for You—not just for Your blessings, but for Your presence. Make Your dwelling place our desire. Give us strength for the journey, and favor for the path ahead. Help us to walk uprightly as we seek You above all else. Amen.
