Creation itself reacts to the authority of God. The clouds, the fire, the mountains melting like wax… everything recognizes Him. Everything responds appropriately.

Let the Earth Rejoice… But Let the Heart Bow
by Torrie Slaughter
There’s something powerful about a celebration where everyone shows up—but not everyone is truly present.
Psalm 97 opens with a bold declaration: “The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice.” It’s not a suggestion—it’s a response. Creation itself reacts to the authority of God. The clouds, the fire, the mountains melting like wax… everything recognizes Him. Everything responds appropriately.
But then there’s us.
Because while creation responds in obedience, humanity often responds in observation.
We see God move. We hear testimonies. We celebrate victories. We lift our hands on Sunday…
—but what about Monday morning when obedience costs something?
Psalm 97:10 shifts the tone: “You who love the Lord, hate evil.”
That’s where the celebration becomes personal.
It’s easy to rejoice when God reigns out there.
It’s another thing to submit when He wants to reign in here.
Psalm 98 continues the call: “Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things.”
But this “new song” isn’t just about melody—it’s about transformation.
A new song means:
A renewed mind (Romans 12:2)
A surrendered heart (Psalm 51:10)
A life that reflects what God has already done
Here’s the tension:
We love the results of God’s reign… but resist the refinement required to live under it.
The psalmist doesn’t separate joy from justice. Celebration from surrender. Worship from obedience.
Everything is connected.
The rivers clap. The mountains sing. The earth rejoices.
And we are invited into that same response—not just with our voices, but with our lives.
So today isn’t just about recognizing that God reigns.
It’s about asking:
Does my life reflect that truth?
Because when the Lord truly reigns in your heart,
your decisions change, your desires shift, and your direction aligns.
And suddenly… your life becomes the song.
Prayer
Lord, You reign over all creation, and today I acknowledge that You reign over me. Forgive me for the times I have celebrated Your power but resisted Your authority in my life. Teach me what it truly means to love You—not just in words, but in the way I live, choose, and respond. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
