When the Wilderness Becomes a Worship Space

by Torrie Slaughter

Have you ever wondered where God is in the middle of a long, uncertain season?
Psalm 105 invites us to lean in and look again—because sometimes,
the wilderness is where God's wonders shine brightest.

As we continue our journey through Psalm 105, we find ourselves immersed in the rich tapestry of God’s providence and provision.
The psalmist pulls back the curtain on history to show us that even when the path looked crooked, God’s hand was steady.

We witness:

  • Joseph's rise to influence after betrayal,

  • God's covenant faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  • And a people sustained by miracle after miracle in barren lands.

Yet these mighty acts did not come without trial.
There were seasons of famine. Captivity. Long stretches of waiting.
But every twist and every tear bore the fingerprints of a faithful Father whose purposes
cannot be thwarted—not by human hands, nor by human failure.

Even in the darkest valleys, God led His people:

  • A cloud by day,

  • Fire by night,

  • Manna from heaven,

  • Water from the rock.

Through it all, His mercy endured forever.

"He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night. They asked, and He brought them quail; He fed them well with the bread of heaven."
(Psalm 105:39-40, NIV)

Action Step:
Today, reflect on one "wilderness moment" in your life—a season when you didn’t know how God would provide.
Write down what He did to sustain you.
Then thank Him for the faithfulness you couldn't see in the moment but can clearly see now.

Let worship arise from your wilderness memories!

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
As we meditate on the wondrous deeds recounted in Psalm 105:16-36, we are reminded of Your unfailing faithfulness across every generation. Thank You for guiding Your people through both trials and triumphs, providing for every need by Your gracious hand. Help us to trust Your heart even when the path is hidden. Let our wildernesses become altars of worship.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
