When Obedience Feels Inconvenient

📖 Psalm 108 • 1 Samuel 13:1–23 • John 7:1–30 • Proverbs 15:4
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Have you ever felt the pressure to act before God says move?
Psalm 108 opens with a bold and beautiful declaration:
“My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul.”
That word—steadfast—is our anchor today. It’s a word that cuts through the chaos of deadlines, decisions, and doubts. It means fixed, firm, immovable. And it stands in sharp contrast to the story of Saul in 1 Samuel 13, who allowed fear and pressure to move him ahead of God’s timing.
Saul’s heart was anxious. The people were scattering. The prophet was late. So Saul chose sacrifice over obedience—and in doing so, he forfeited his kingdom. He did the “right” thing the wrong way. That’s what happens when our heart is moved by convenience instead of conviction.
But the psalmist models a different path. Despite whatever may have been going on around him, his heart remains fixed—not on outcome, but on God’s character.
“For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” (v.4)
What a contrast! While Saul leaned into panic, the psalmist leaned into praise. While Saul tried to secure the victory, the psalmist declared that victory is found in God alone (v.13).
Jesus also walked this line of pressure in John 7. His brothers urged Him to show off His power publicly, but He replied, “My time has not yet come.” Even Jesus modeled divine timing and heart posture over hurried performance.
So here’s the question for us:
Are we making decisions out of pressure… or from a steadfast heart that trusts God’s timing?
📝 Journal Prompt:
Where am I tempted to “move ahead” of God? What would it look like to worship while I wait?
🙏🏽 Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Settle my heart when circumstances rush me. Make me steadfast like the psalmist—anchored in Your love and firm in faith. When obedience feels inconvenient, remind me that victory belongs to You. Help me trust Your timing, knowing You are faithful to deliver. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
