Faith That Fights Quietly

by Torrie Slaughter

What does it look like to keep moving forward in faith when your heart is aching and no one sees the battle but God?

Psalm 109 is not a quiet psalm. It’s a bold cry—a raw, honest prayer in the face of betrayal and injustice. The psalmist holds nothing back, opening with:

“For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me…they encircle me with words of hate.” (v.2-3)

And yet, in the tension between pain and petition, this psalm becomes a blueprint for how faith fights quietly—with honesty, dependence, and trust.

🙏🏽 1. Honest Lamentation

The psalmist doesn’t pretend. He brings his brokenness to the throne. And like Jonathan in 1 Samuel 14, who stepped into battle with just one armor-bearer, the psalmist steps into prayer with only God on his side. It reminds us: You don’t need a crowd to take your pain to the King.

⚖️ 2. Prayer for Justice

There’s no denying this psalm is intense. The psalmist desires God’s judgment—but notice he doesn't take revenge himself. He entrusts justice to the only One qualified to handle it. In our own lives, that’s not always easy. But obedience in prayer means surrendering outcomes and believing God will do what is right.

🌱 3. Hope in God’s Faithfulness

Even in his distress, the psalmist declares,

“But You, Sovereign Lord, help me for Your name’s sake; out of the goodness of Your love, deliver me.”(v.21)

This is where obedience meets opportunity. In hardship, the opportunity isn’t to retaliate—it’s to remember that God sees, God hears, and God will act. Just like Jesus in John 7, who waited for the Father’s timing to speak and move, we can trust that quiet faith does not mean powerless faith.

📝 Journal Prompt:

Where have I been tempted to “lash out” instead of laying my pain before the Lord? What does it look like to fight through prayer today?

🙏🏽 Prayer

Lord, when I feel wronged, unseen, or overwhelmed, help me respond with faith instead of fury. Teach me to bring every emotion to You without shame. Help me remember that You are my Defender, and Your timing is perfect. Strengthen me to fight quietly—with trust, prayer, and steadfast hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
