The Victory That Doesn’t Make Sense
by Torrie Slaughter
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Sometimes, the victory God gives doesn’t look like it should work. No sword, no armor, no crowd—just faith. That’s the heart of David’s story in 1 Samuel 17. And it’s also the spirit of Psalm 111—a psalm of praise that points to God’s majestic, countercultural ways.
“Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.” (Psalm 111:2)
David steps onto the battlefield with a sling and a history of seeing God’s faithfulness. He remembered God’s past victories (like the lion and the bear), and that memory gave him the confidence to face the giant. Psalm 111 invites us into the same kind of worship—remembering God’s works so our hearts stay bold in faith.
David’s obedience doesn’t make sense to those around him. Saul tries to give him his armor, Goliath mocks him, and even his own brothers question his motives. But David isn’t interested in earthly affirmation—his heart is fixed on honoring God.
Psalm 111:10 says:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
David showed that reverent fear. And through him, we see a shadow of Christ—the greater Shepherd-King—who also stepped forward into a battle no one else could fight. In John 8, Jesus speaks with clarity and conviction because He knew the One who sent Him. He didn’t need to justify His calling—He just obeyed.
So today, consider this: What “victory” might God be preparing you for that looks unconventional? What step of obedience might feel small—but could become monumental when backed by heaven?
📝 Journal Prompt:
Where am I overcomplicating obedience by trying to “make it make sense”? What is God asking me to trust Him with, even if it looks foolish to others?
🙏🏽 Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are the God of wonder and wisdom. Thank You for reminding me through David’s story and Psalm 111 that Your ways are higher, and Your victories don’t have to look like the world’s. Give me the courage to obey You—even when it doesn’t make sense. Let my heart be filled with reverent awe and unwavering faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
