Pressed, But Not Defeated

by Torrie Slaughter

Some battles are loud.

Others happen in silence—inside your mind, inside your waiting, inside the private places where fear tries to convince you that God has forgotten you.

Psalm 118 meets us there.

“Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free.” (Psalm 118:5)

Distress is real.

Faith does not deny pressure.

It just refuses to let pressure have the final word. This Psalm is not written by someone untouched by hardship. It is written by someone who has been surrounded, opposed, pressed, and still stands with confidence:

“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.” (Psalm 118:6)

That is spiritual authority.

Not pretending the battle does not exist.

Knowing Who stands with you in it.

Leadership fatigue often sounds like quiet surrender:
“I’m tired.”
“This is too much.”
“Maybe I should just stop.”

But the enemy loves exhaustion because tired people start agreeing with lies they would normally rebuke.

This is why rest is holy.

Not laziness.

Alignment.

Jehovah Raah does not drive His sheep into destruction through constant performance. He leads them beside still waters.

Rest is not weakness.

It is wisdom.

“The Lord has disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over to death.” (Psalm 118:18)

Even pressure can be proof of God’s preserving hand.

You are pressed.

But not abandoned.

Corrected.

But not rejected.

Tired.

But not defeated.

The Lord is still on your side.

And that changes everything.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being with me in every place of distress. When fear rises, remind me that You are on my side. Strengthen me where I feel weary and restore what exhaustion has drained. Teach me holy rest and help me stop confusing overworking with obedience. Thank You for preserving me, correcting me, and keeping me. I trust that even in pressure, You are still leading me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Action Step

Ask yourself honestly:

Am I resting in God or just collapsing from exhaustion?

Create one intentional moment of rest with the Lord today—without guilt.

Sit. Pray. Breathe. Listen.

Let rest become resistance.
