The Kindness of Correction

by Torrie Slaughter

Most people do not immediately associate correction with kindness, yet the psalmist boldly declares, “It was good for me to be afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes.” That kind of perspective only develops when someone realizes God’s correction is not meant to destroy them but to restore them.

Conviction can feel uncomfortable because it exposes areas we would rather hide. Pride resists correction because it fears shame. But humility recognizes that God only confronts what He still intends to heal.

This psalm reminds us that hardship can produce spiritual depth when surrendered to God. Affliction has a way of revealing what comfort often conceals. It exposes misplaced priorities, hidden fears, and areas where our trust has weakened.

God’s mercy is not only seen in blessing. Sometimes His mercy appears through interruption, conviction, and truth.

Prayer

Lord, give me a humble heart that receives Your correction without resistance. Thank You for loving me enough to confront what could harm me. Amen.

Action Step

Ask the Lord if there is an area where you have been defensive instead of surrendered. Sit honestly with what He reveals.
