Resting Beneath His Banner

by Torrie Slaughter

After a week spent watching Solomon build the Temple and the early Church carry the Gospel beyond Jerusalem, Psalm 131 offers us something unexpected: stillness.

David writes,

"Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother..." (Psalm 131:2)

A weaned child no longer comes to the mother simply for what she can provide. The child has learned to rest simply because she is there.

What a beautiful picture of spiritual maturity.

Many of us begin our walk with God asking Him to fix our problems, answer our prayers, or open the next door. Yet as we grow, we discover that His presence is the greatest gift He gives.

This week's theme has challenged us to build what Heaven can defend. But before we rush into building, God invites us to quiet our hearts before Him.

Pride tells us we must understand everything.
Fear tells us we must control everything.
Faith teaches us to trust the One who holds everything together.

David admits there are matters "too great and too marvelous" for him to fully comprehend. Instead of exhausting himself trying to figure everything out, he chooses surrender.

Under the banner of Jehovah Nissi, victory is not found in having all the answers.

Victory is found in resting in the One who does.

As you move into the weekend, perhaps the Lord is not asking you to work harder or strive more. Perhaps He is simply inviting you to sit quietly in His presence and trust that He is building what you cannot yet see.

Reflection

What burden or unanswered question do you need to place into God's hands today?

Prayer

Father, quiet my anxious thoughts and teach me to rest in Your presence. Help me trust You with the things I cannot understand and believe that You are faithfully working on my behalf. Amen.
