Making Room for God's Presence

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 132 recalls David's determination to find a dwelling place for the Lord.

He declares,

"Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house, or go up to the comfort of my bed; I will not give sleep to my eyes... until I find a place for the LORD." (Psalm 132:3-5)

David understood something that every generation must rediscover: God's presence is worth pursuing.

Ironically, David was not the one chosen to build the Temple. That assignment belonged to Solomon. Yet David's heart of devotion laid the foundation for what would come.

Sometimes God calls us to prepare what someone else will complete.

A parent prays over children whose future they cannot yet see.
A teacher plants seeds that may not bloom for years.
A faithful believer serves quietly, trusting that God is working beyond what human eyes can measure.

This psalm reminds us that the Lord does not simply seek impressive buildings or outward accomplishments. He desires hearts that make room for Him.

As we prepare for a new week of study, let us remember that we are now His dwelling place through Christ. The same God who filled the Temple with His glory desires to fill our lives with His presence.

Jehovah Nissi goes before us as our banner, but He also walks with us as our faithful God.

May our greatest ambition never be to build our own kingdoms.

May it be to create space where the King of Kings is welcome.

Reflection

What area of your life could you intentionally set apart this week to deepen your relationship with God?

Prayer

Lord, create in me a heart like David's that longs for Your presence above all else. Help me make room for You in my thoughts, my schedule, and my daily life. May everything I build point back to You and bring You glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
