Psalm 133:1-3

United Under One Banner

by Torrie Slaughter

Key Verse

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" — Psalm 133:1

There is a difference between gathering together and dwelling together.

Many people can occupy the same room, attend the same church, work on the same team, or even live in the same home without experiencing true unity. Unity is not merely proximity. Unity is agreement under God's authority.

Psalm 133 is one of the Songs of Ascents, sung by worshipers as they traveled to Jerusalem. As the people journeyed toward the place of worship, they were reminded that God's desire was not simply for individuals to seek Him but for His people to seek Him together.

David describes unity as precious oil running down Aaron's beard and as the dew of Mount Hermon falling upon the mountains of Zion. Both images point to something that originates from above. Oil and dew are not manufactured by human effort. They are gifts from God.

The same is true of genuine unity.

Many of us spend tremendous energy trying to create harmony through our own strength. Yet biblical unity is produced when hearts surrender to the Lord and align beneath His banner.

This week's theme focuses on identity. Psalm 133 reminds us that one of the clearest markers of our identity in Christ is our ability to walk in unity with fellow believers. Unity does not mean everyone thinks the same, looks the same, or has the same assignment. It means we recognize that we belong to the same King.

As Peter begins his journey toward Cornelius in Acts 10, God is preparing him to see beyond old divisions. Peter must learn that God's family is larger than he imagined. The Lord is expanding Peter's understanding of who belongs under His banner.

The same question remains for us today.

Are we allowing personal preferences, past wounds, or pride to divide what God desires to unite?

Unity flourishes when we remember that our identity is found first in Christ and not in our opinions, backgrounds, or experiences.

Where God's people gather under His authority, His blessing flows.

Reflection

What relationship, conversation, or attitude might God be asking you to surrender so that unity can flourish?

Prayer

Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family. Help me walk in humility, grace, and love toward others. Remove anything in my heart that creates unnecessary division. Teach me to value unity and to live under Your banner with my brothers and sisters in Christ. In Jesus' name, amen.
