Wednesday, June 17, 2026 - Psalm 135:1-21
Remember Who Your God Is
by Torrie Slaughter
Key Verse
"For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods." — Psalm 135:5
One of the greatest dangers believers face is forgetfulness.
Not forgetfulness of information, but forgetfulness of God's character.
Psalm 135 serves as a reminder of who God is and what He has done. The psalmist recounts God's power in creation, His faithfulness toward Israel, and His victory over nations and kings.
Then comes a sharp contrast.
The idols of the nations are described as having mouths that cannot speak, eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear, and no breath in them.
They appear powerful, but they are powerless.
This truth becomes especially significant as we read about Elijah's confrontation on Mount Carmel. Hundreds of prophets cry out to Baal, but no answer comes because false gods cannot respond.
The issue on Mount Carmel was not merely worship. It was identity.
The people had attempted to divide their allegiance between God and Baal. Elijah's famous question still challenges believers today:
"How long will you halt between two opinions?"
We often think idols belong to ancient history, yet modern idols still compete for our loyalty. Success, comfort, approval, status, and self-sufficiency can all become substitutes for wholehearted devotion.
Whatever we trust more than God begins shaping our identity.
Psalm 135 calls us back to the truth.
The Lord alone is worthy of our worship because He alone is living, active, and sovereign.
When we remember who God is, we are reminded who we are.
We belong to the King who speaks, hears, sees, and acts.
Reflection
What voice or influence has been competing for God's place in your heart?
Prayer
Father, keep my heart from idols. Help me remember Your faithfulness and trust Your power. Teach me to worship You alone and to find my identity in Your truth rather than the temporary promises of this world. In Jesus' name, amen.
