His Mercy Endures Forever

by Torrie Slaughter

Key Verse

"O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever." — Psalm 136:1

There are seasons when we need more than new information.

We need remembrance.

Psalm 136 repeats the phrase "for His mercy endureth forever" twenty-six times. At first glance, the repetition may seem excessive. Yet God knows how easily His people forget.

When life becomes difficult, we often remember our problems more clearly than God's faithfulness.

Elijah experienced one of the greatest victories recorded in Scripture on Mount Carmel. Fire fell from heaven. The people acknowledged God. Yet only a short time later, Elijah found himself discouraged, fearful, and exhausted beneath a juniper tree.

How quickly human emotions can shift.

What sustained Elijah was not his feelings. What sustained him was God's mercy.

Psalm 136 teaches us to rehearse God's faithfulness until it becomes stronger than our fear.

The psalmist remembers creation.
He remembers deliverance from Egypt.
He remembers victories in battle.
He remembers God's provision.

Each memory ends with the same declaration:

His mercy endures forever.

As disciples, we must learn this discipline.

When fear rises, remember His mercy.
When disappointment comes, remember His mercy.
When answers seem delayed, remember His mercy.

God's faithfulness is not dependent upon our circumstances.

His mercy has carried His people through every generation and it will carry us as well.

Reflection

What evidence of God's mercy can you intentionally remember today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your enduring mercy. Help me remember Your faithfulness when challenges arise. Strengthen my faith through the testimony of all You have already done. Teach me to trust Your character even when I do not understand the circumstances. In Jesus' name, amen.
