When Faith Becomes Your Refuge
by Torrie Slaughter
"I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy." — Psalm 140:12
There are moments in life when it feels as though opposition is coming from every direction. Words are spoken against you. Circumstances seem stacked against you. You find yourself asking, "Lord, how much longer?"
David understood this feeling well. Psalm 140 is a prayer for protection from evil men and harmful schemes. Yet David does not spend the entire psalm describing the problem. Instead, he anchors himself in the character of God.
He remembers who God is.
That is one of the greatest acts of faith.
Faith is not pretending difficulties do not exist. Faith is choosing to remember God's faithfulness while standing in the middle of difficulty.
This connects beautifully with the stories we encounter today. The kings in 2 Kings could not see where their provision would come from. The widow could not see how her debt would be paid. Paul and Barnabas faced opposition while carrying the gospel.
Yet God was already working.
Jehovah Nissi, the Lord our Banner, reminds us that our confidence is not found in favorable circumstances but in God's presence over our lives. A banner was raised high above an army to give direction, confidence, and unity. Even when the battlefield looked chaotic, the banner remained visible.
The same is true today.
You may not see the outcome. You may not know how God will provide. You may not understand the path ahead. But the Banner still stands.
God has not abandoned the work He began.
Reflection
Where do you need to stop focusing on the opposition and start remembering God's character?
Prayer
Lord, when I cannot see the outcome, help me remember who You are. Be my refuge, my defender, and my Banner. Strengthen my faith to trust Your unfinished work. Amen.
