When You Feel Surrounded

by Torrie Slaughter

"I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy." — Psalm 142:1

Psalm 142 was written while David was hiding in a cave.

A cave is a place where vision is limited.

You cannot see very far.
You cannot see what is around the next corner.
You cannot see how God will make a way.

Yet caves often become classrooms of faith.

David honestly tells God about his fears, troubles, and loneliness. But he also declares something powerful:

"You are my refuge."

Not the cave.
Not the circumstances.
Not his own ability.

God.

Today's readings remind us that what we see is not all that exists. Elisha's servant saw enemy armies. Elisha saw heaven's armies. Samaria saw famine. God saw deliverance. Lydia heard a message. God opened her heart.

Faith allows us to believe there is more happening than what our eyes can currently perceive.

Jehovah Nissi is the Banner that stands above every circumstance. The enemy may surround you, but God's presence surrounds the enemy.

The story is bigger than what you can see today.

Reflection

What circumstance has become larger in your mind than God's presence?

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to see beyond my circumstances. Help me trust Your unseen work and remember that You are my refuge. Amen.
