Day 186 Confidence in the Chaos

David doesn’t deny the danger. He names it. Then he immediately lifts his eyes. He doesn’t just say God is with him—he declares God is surrounding him. That’s what a life rooted in the Word does: it gives us language for hope even in heartbreak.

Confidence in the Chaos

by Torrie Slaughter

Have you ever felt like the odds were stacked against you—like even God had left your side?

David writes Psalm 3 while running for his life, betrayed by his own son, and mocked by those who once cheered for him. It’s a moment where many would unravel. But David? He roots himself in what he knows about God, not what others say about Him.

🛡️ God is My Shield

“Lord, how many are my foes!... But you, Lord, are a shield around me…” (vv. 1–3)

David doesn’t deny the danger. He names it. Then he immediately lifts his eyes. He doesn’t just say God is with him—he declares God is surrounding him. That’s what a life rooted in the Word does: it gives us language for hope even in heartbreak.

Your enemies may be emotional. Your foes may be mental. But the shield of God is stronger than the threats surrounding you.

🌄 Rest is a Weapon

“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.” (v. 5)

Pause and consider: David is sleeping… in exile. Hunted. Rejected. And yet, he rests.

Rest becomes a form of resistance. It’s proof that you trust God enough to let go—even temporarily—and say, “You’re in control.”

🗣️ Fear Doesn’t Get the Final Word

“I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me…” (v. 6)

Like Paul standing before a hostile crowd in Acts 23, David doesn’t shrink back. He doesn’t wait for everything to feel safe—he calls on God to move in power.

Rooted people may tremble—but they don’t topple.

🌀 Reflection Questions:

  1. Where in my life do I feel surrounded—and how can I respond with trust?

  2. Am I using rest as a form of worship and warfare—or am I consumed by worry?

  3. Do I believe God can lift my head—even when I feel like hanging it low?

🙏🏽 Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
You are my shield and my safe place. You lift my head when shame or sorrow pulls it down. Teach me to rest—not because life is perfect, but because You are faithful. Let my confidence in You be louder than the chaos around me. Help me to sleep in peace and rise in faith.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
