God Hears Your Appeal
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 40:1–10
Psalm 40 is a song of deliverance, a testimony of God’s faithfulness, and a declaration of His glory. David begins with: “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry” (v.1). Waiting is never easy—but it’s in the waiting that faith grows, trust is tested, and hope is stretched. David’s waiting wasn’t passive; it was confident expectation that God would act.
And He did. “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (v.2). The picture is vivid: David was stuck in a place he couldn’t escape alone. Yet God, rich in mercy, reached down and lifted him up. Have you been there? Helpless, stuck, and desperate—only to experience God’s rescuing hand pulling you into stability?
David’s deliverance birthed a new song: “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him” (v.3). Our testimonies are never just for us. When God delivers, He writes His glory into our story so that others may believe.
The psalm continues with reminders of trust (v.4), wonder (v.5), surrender (vv.6–8), and proclamation (vv.9–10). God is not after empty rituals—He’s after surrendered hearts that proclaim His faithfulness.
Verdict 1: God hears your appeal. He turns toward your cry, lifts you from the pit, and gives you a firm place to stand. And when He does, don’t keep it to yourself—sing your new song so others may put their trust in Him.
