Trusting in the Name of the Lord

by Torrie Slaughter

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." (Psalm 20:7)

Psalm 20 is a prayer for God’s blessing and protection, emphasizing the importance of placing our trust in Him rather than in human strength or resources. David confidently declares that those who trust in God will rise and stand firm.

Psalm 20:1-2: The Prelude of Praise

"May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion."

The journey of victorious living begins with the prelude of praise. In times of distress and uncertainty, believers are called to lift their voices in praise, seeking the protection and support that only the God of Jacob can provide. This is a profound acknowledgment that victory is not achieved through our strength alone but through the divine intervention of a loving and powerful God.

Psalm 20:5: The Heart's Declaration

"May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests."

As believers embrace the practice of praising God before the battle, their hearts declare the joy of anticipated victory. Shouts of joy rise, and banners are lifted high in the name of the God who grants the requests of His people. This declaration is a testament to the faith that precedes triumph, a faith that sees victory even before the battle unfolds.

Psalm 20:7: Trust in the Lord's Strength

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."

In a world that often relies on human strength and resources, believers are called to place their trust in the Lord. The juxtaposition of chariots and horses, symbols of earthly might, highlights the futility of relying solely on human endeavors. Trusting in the name of the Lord is an acknowledgment that true strength and victory come from a source beyond the natural realm.

Psalm 20:8-9: The Assurance of Victory

"They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. Lord, give victory to the king! Answer us when we call!"

As the battle unfolds, believers can stand firm in the assurance that their enemies will be brought to their knees. The plea for victory is not a desperate cry but a confident declaration, knowing that God is faithful to answer when His people call. Victory is not a distant hope but a promised reality for those who trust in the Lord.

This psalm encourages us to examine where we place our trust. Are we relying on our own abilities, possessions, or status? Or are we fully dependent on God’s power and faithfulness?

Reflection Questions:

  1. What areas of your life are you tempted to trust in human strength rather than God?

  2. How can you cultivate deeper trust in God’s name and promises?
