God Grants His Wisdom
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 42:1–11
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”(vv.1–2)
The psalmist opens with raw longing—a soul desperate for the living God. This isn’t a casual desire; it’s survival-level thirst. Only God can satisfy the deepest ache of the human heart.
But longing quickly shifts to lament: “My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’” (v.3). Pain and doubt threaten to drown faith, yet the psalmist remembers times of joyful worship. Memory becomes wisdom—anchoring the heart in what God has done before.
Then comes the turning point: “Why, my soul, are you downcast?… Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (vv.5,11). The psalmist doesn’t deny his despair; he speaks truth into it. He counsels his own soul with God’s wisdom.
Even in sorrow, he confesses: “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me.” (v.8). Deep calls to deep, and God’s presence answers with unfailing love.
Verdict 4: God grants His wisdom. When despair overwhelms, His Spirit teaches us to remember, to hope, and to praise—anchoring our souls in His unfailing love.
