Remembering God’s Faithfulness
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 44:1–8
“We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.” (v.1)
Looking back fuels faith for today. Psalm 44 begins with a rehearsal of God’s mighty works—the stories of deliverance from Egypt, victories in the land, and generations sustained by His hand. These weren’t just history lessons; they were reminders that God’s power and love never change.
“It was not by their sword that they won the land… it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.” (v.3)
The psalmist makes it clear—victory didn’t come from human strength but from God’s love. That same truth steadies us: every breakthrough in our lives has come, not by our striving, but by His faithful hand.
Then comes a declaration of trust: “You are my King and my God… I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies.” (vv.4–7) Our boast isn’t in our ability, resources, or strategy—it’s in the Lord. He is our defender, and His strength is our hope.
The psalm closes with a vow of worship: “In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.”(v.8) Reflection leads to gratitude, and gratitude overflows in praise.
Weekend Reflection: Remember God’s faithfulness. Let the stories of His goodness in the past—both in Scripture and in your own life—anchor your heart in the present. Trust His strength, boast in His name, and commit to praise Him forever.
