Rejoicing in God’s Strength

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture Focus: Psalm 21:1–13

Key Verse:
"The king rejoices in your strength, Lord. How great is his joy in the victories you give!" (Psalm 21:1, NIV)

In Psalm 21, we witness a beautiful song of thanksgiving and praise, celebrating God’s strength and the victories He grants. King David, reflecting on his triumphs, acknowledges that these successes are not by his own might but through the strength of the Lord. It is a reminder that God is the ultimate source of power, provision, and protection in our lives.

David begins this psalm with joy, exalting God for the blessings and favor He has poured out. The king recognizes that his heart’s desires and prayers were answered by God’s generous hand. It’s a powerful reminder for us to rejoice in the ways God has faithfully provided for us, from the smallest blessings to the greatest victories. When we take the time to reflect on His goodness, we can’t help but echo David’s joy and gratitude.

This psalm also shifts focus to God’s future victories. David proclaims confidence in God’s justice, declaring that His enemies will not prevail. This serves as a reminder that God is sovereign and that evil will ultimately be defeated. While we may face battles in life, we can rest in the assurance that God is on the throne and that His purposes will prevail.

The final verses of Psalm 21 call us to exalt God for His power and glory: “Be exalted in your strength, Lord; we will sing and praise your might” (Psalm 21:13). David’s response to God’s faithfulness is worship—a posture we, too, should adopt. Whether we are celebrating victories or waiting on breakthroughs, praising God aligns our hearts with His and strengthens our faith.
