Cast Your Cares on the Lord

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 55:1–23

“Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.” David’s words in Psalm 55 capture the weariness we all know—the longing to escape from pain, betrayal, and the pressures that weigh heavy on our hearts.

This psalm reveals a wound deeper than an enemy’s attack: the betrayal of a close friend. David confesses the anguish of being wounded by one who once shared fellowship in God’s house. Few pains cut deeper than betrayal.

Yet in the middle of his lament, David turns to a promise that steadies the soul: “Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.” To cast is not to gently place—it is to hurl, to throw with force. God invites us to give Him the full weight of our fears, grief, and burdens. He can bear what we cannot.

The psalm closes with a declaration: “But as for me, I trust in You.” Trust doesn’t erase the storm, but it anchors us in the One who sustains. When betrayal stings, when the weight feels unbearable, we find refuge not in escape but in casting our cares on the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, I bring You the burdens too heavy for me to carry. Sustain me today, and teach me to trust in Your unfailing care. Amen.
