Faith That Conquers Fear
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 56:1–13
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” David’s words, written while captured by the Philistines, strike at the core of our own battles with fear. He doesn’t deny fear—he names it—but he also refuses to let it have the final word.
David declares: “In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” His enemies were real, yet his confidence was rooted in a greater reality: God’s sovereignty and care. People may wound us, but nothing can separate us from God’s love.
One of the most tender promises comes in verse 8: “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in Your bottle.”Every tear matters to God. He sees, He records, and He treasures the cries of His children.
Even before deliverance arrives, David chooses to praise: “In God I trust and am not afraid.” By the psalm’s end, he vows thanksgiving, confident that God will deliver him and set his feet in the light of life.
Psalm 56 reminds us: fear may rise, but faith can rise higher. We serve a God who sees, who sustains, and who leads us into light.
Prayer: Lord, when fear surrounds me, remind me that You are greater. Teach me to trust, to praise, and to walk in the light of Your life. Amen.
