The God Who Hears and Defends

by Torrie Slaughter

“Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy.” (Psalm 64:1)

David knew betrayal and opposition, yet he didn’t retaliate—he prayed. Psalm 64 reminds us that every whispered plea and every cry for help reaches the heart of God.

What makes this psalm powerful is the shift from plea to confidence: “But God will shoot them with his arrows; they will suddenly be struck down.” (v. 7). David doesn’t dwell on his enemies; he declares God’s justice. The psalm ends with joy: “The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him.” (v. 10).

Our calling is the same—to entrust our struggles to the God who defends. No plot, no betrayal, no injustice is too great for Him. Refuge in His presence leads not to despair, but to rejoicing.

Takeaway:
Don’t fix your gaze on the enemy—fix it on the God who delivers.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for hearing our cries and protecting us from every scheme of the enemy. Teach us to take refuge in You, rejoicing in Your justice and trusting Your perfect timing. Amen.
