Rise & Reign: From the Cradle to the Crown
by Torrie Slaughter
(Psalm 71:1–24)
Psalm 71 is the testimony of a seasoned believer. It begins with confidence: “In You, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame” (v.1). This is not the cry of a newcomer but the steady trust of someone who has walked with God from youth and found Him faithful.
The psalmist looks back and remembers, “From birth I have relied on You; You brought me forth from my mother’s womb” (v.6). What a reminder that God’s hand has guided us from the very beginning! And even in old age, he prays, “Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone” (v.9).
This is hope that does not diminish with time. Even after troubles, he declares: “You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth You will again bring me up” (v.20). That’s resurrection faith—confidence that God can lift us from despair and breathe new life into weary places.
Most of all, the psalmist resolves to leave a legacy: “Even when I am old and gray… till I declare Your power to the next generation” (v.18). His vision stretches beyond himself. His worship becomes a testimony for those who follow.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my refuge from birth until now. Teach me to praise You more and more, even when I feel weak. Let my life declare Your faithfulness to the next generation, and may my story point others to Your power and love. Amen.
