Rise & Reign: When Life Feels Unfair
by Torrie Slaughter
(Psalm 73:1–28)
Have you ever felt the sting of unfairness—working hard, praying faithfully, yet watching those who ignore God seem to thrive? That’s exactly where Asaph found himself in Psalm 73. He begins, “Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart” (v.1), but quickly admits his struggle: “They have no struggles… their bodies are healthy and strong” (vv.4–5). The prosperity of the wicked left him questioning whether his pursuit of purity was in vain (v.13).
A Shift in Perspective
Everything changes when Asaph enters God’s sanctuary: “Then I understood their final destiny” (v.17). In God’s presence, his vision clears. What once looked permanent is revealed as temporary—prosperity built on slippery ground that will vanish like a dream (vv.18–20).
The Real Treasure
Asaph also realizes how envy had distorted his heart. Yet even in his bitterness, God never let him go: “You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory” (vv.23–24). The true inheritance isn’t fleeting success—it’s the abiding presence of God.
Choosing Nearness Over Comparison
The psalm ends in triumph: “But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge”(v.28). When we feel weighed down by comparison or confusion, we too can find refuge in His presence and rest in the treasure of His nearness.
Closing Prayer
Lord, when life feels unfair, draw me into Your presence. Keep my heart from envy and my eyes fixed on You. Be my portion and my refuge, today and always. Amen.
