Reading Focus: Psalm 103
When David says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul,” he isn’t whispering from comfort — he’s commanding his weary heart to rise. This psalm is the sound of a survivor remembering who their God is.
David begins by telling his soul, “Forget not all His benefits.” (v. 2) Why? Because pain has a way of stealing memory. It makes us forget what God has already done. So David rewinds his story — forgiveness, healing, redemption, love, renewal — and realizes that every scar was a setup for greater strength. What tried to ruin him actually revealed God’s faithfulness.
Then comes the heart of the psalm: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”(v. 8) This is the kind of love that restores broken people. It’s the love that refuses to treat us as our sins deserve, that lifts us from the pit and crowns us with compassion. When David looks back, he doesn’t just see failure — he sees the Father’s fingerprints all over his redemption story.
He closes with a revelation bigger than his pain: “The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all.” (v. 19) That means nothing — not your mistakes, not your enemies, not your past — can overthrow what God has decreed over your life. You can rise, not because you’re strong, but because His mercy never ends.
So, who can rise from what tried to ruin you?
Anyone who remembers that God’s grace always outruns the grave.
