Psalm 46

God Is Our Refuge, Not Our Escape

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 46 meets us in the middle of chaos. It does not deny trouble — it anchors us in the presence of God within it. When distractions multiply and waiting stretches longer than expected, this psalm calls us back to the unshakable truth of who God is.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, ESV)

Notice the present tense: is. Not was. Not will be. Victory begins with recognizing that God is already near, already active, already sufficient. Refuge is not avoidance — it is positioning ourselves under His protection while the storm still rages. Today, instead of trying to control every outcome, allow yourself to rest in the strength that comes from belonging to Him.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, ESV)

Stillness is not inactivity; it is trust expressed through surrender. When distraction pulls you in ten directions, stillness becomes an act of obedience. It is a declaration that God’s rule is not threatened by your circumstances. In the quiet, He restores clarity and reminds you that victory is not dependent on your striving.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. You are not navigating this season alone. The banner of victory is raised not because everything is calm, but because the King is present.
