Fear Leads to Desperation – When We Forget God’s Power

By Torrie Slaughter

📖 Psalm 55:22“Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”

🔎 Reflection:
Fear makes us panic, grasping for solutions rather than turning to God. The Israelites feared their circumstances so much that they rebelled, forgetting all that God had done for them. But David, even in deep distress, reminds us of a powerful truth: God will sustain us when we give our burdens to Him.

A Cry of Distress

Psalm 55 opens with David's heartfelt cry to God: "Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me" (Psalm 55:1-2, NIV). In these words, we witness David's anguish and desperation in the face of betrayal from a close friend. He pours out his heart to God, seeking solace and deliverance from the pain of betrayal.

Finding Refuge in God

As we continue reading, we see David's unwavering trust in God as his refuge and strength amidst adversity. He declares, "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken" (Psalm 55:22, NIV). David's words offer hope and encouragement to all who find themselves in times of distress, reminding us that God is our rock and our salvation, ready to sustain us through every trial.

The Assurance of God's Justice

Throughout Psalm 55, we hear David's plea for justice against his enemies. He entrusts his cause to God, knowing that He is a righteous judge who will bring justice to the wicked. David concludes the psalm with a note of confidence in God's faithfulness, declaring, "But as for me, I trust in you" (Psalm 55:23, NIV).

Application:
What fear or worry are you holding onto? Write it down, then pray and release it to God. Trust that He will sustain you.

🙏 Prayer: Father, I cast my burdens upon You today. I trust that You will sustain me and keep me from being shaken. Amen.
