March 17 — Psalm 60
When God Restores What Was Shaken
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 60 is a prayer written during a time when Israel had experienced military setbacks. The nation had felt the shock of defeat, and David openly acknowledges the disruption it caused. This psalm reminds us that even seasons of struggle can become moments where God restores His people and re-establishes their direction.
“O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses; you have been angry; oh, restore us.” (Psalm 60:1, ESV)
David begins honestly. Something has gone wrong, and the people feel the weight of it. Their security has been shaken. Yet instead of abandoning faith, David turns directly to God and asks for restoration.
“You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open; repair its breaches, for it totters.” (Psalm 60:2, ESV)
The imagery here is powerful. The land itself appears unstable, as if the ground beneath their feet has been split apart. Spiritually, many believers know what this feels like. Circumstances can shift suddenly, leaving us wondering where our stability has gone.
But David understands that the same God who allows shaking is also the One who repairs what is broken.
“You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow.” (Psalm 60:4, ESV)
The banner represents God’s authority and protection. In ancient battles, a banner signaled where the army should rally. When confusion spread across the battlefield, soldiers would look for the banner to know where safety and direction remained.
In the same way, the Lord becomes the place His people run to when everything around them feels uncertain.
“Give us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man!” (Psalm 60:11, ESV)
David ends the psalm with clarity. Human strength is limited, but God’s power is not. Victory ultimately comes from the Lord, not from human strategy alone.
As you pray through Psalm 60 today, remember that God can restore what seasons of difficulty have shaken. When the ground feels unstable, lift your eyes to the banner of the Lord.
He is still the One who repairs what has been torn.
