Psalm 73 — Wednesday, April 1
When Comparison Clouds Your Vision
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 73 is one of the most honest passages in all of Scripture. It is written by Asaph, a worship leader who did not hide his internal struggle. Instead, he brought it before God.
At the beginning of this Psalm, Asaph admits something many wrestle with but rarely say out loud:
“I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked” (v. 3).
This Psalm was written from a place of tension—where what he saw did not match what he believed. The wicked seemed to prosper. The prideful seemed unbothered. Meanwhile, those trying to live rightly appeared to struggle.
And for a moment, his footing slipped.
What This Psalm Reveals
Psalm 73 walks us through a transformation:
Confusion: “Why do they prosper?” (v. 3–12)
Frustration: “Have I kept my heart pure in vain?” (v. 13)
Turning point: “Until I entered the sanctuary of God…” (v. 17)
Clarity: “Then I understood their end” (v. 17)
Realignment: “God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (v. 26)
The shift did not happen because circumstances changed.
It happened because perspective changed in God’s presence.
A Moment to Reflect
Comparison is subtle. It does not always sound like jealousy. Sometimes it sounds like:
“Why is their life moving faster than mine?”
“Why does it seem easier for them?”
“Am I doing something wrong?”
Psalm 73 invites you to bring those thoughts into the presence of God instead of letting them shape your beliefs.
Because what you see is not always the full story.
This Connects to Your Week
If Monday established alignment, Tuesday confronts what tries to disrupt it:
Comparison.
You cannot walk in victory while measuring your life against someone else’s path.
God’s plan for you is not behind—it is specific.
Prayer
Lord,
You see every thought and every question I carry. When comparison tries to distort my vision, bring me back into Your presence. Help me to trust Your timing and Your plan for my life. You are my portion, my strength, and my source. I choose to fix my eyes on You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Action Step
When you feel comparison rising today, pause and say:
“God, help me see this the way You do.”
Then take a moment to thank Him for what He is doing in your life right now.
