Dependence When You Need God Now

Psalm 70:1–5

There are prayers we pray slowly, carefully choosing our words. And then there are prayers that sound like Psalm 70:

“O God, make haste to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!”

David doesn't give us a long introduction. He doesn't explain everything that happened. He simply cries out because he needs God to intervene.

Psalm 70 reminds us that urgency and dependence can occupy the same prayer.

David is surrounded by people who seek his harm and delight in his trouble. Yet notice where his distress sends him. He doesn't make his enemies his primary focus. He turns toward God.

That matters.

When pressure increases, we can become so consumed with what is happening that we lose sight of Who we are following. We start looking for the fastest solution, the quickest relief, or anyone who can make the discomfort stop.

But dependence says, “Even when I need help quickly, I still know where my help comes from.”

David even calls himself “poor and needy.” This isn't weakness masquerading as spirituality. It is honest recognition of dependence. He knows he cannot deliver himself.

And perhaps that is part of what the Shepherd has been teaching us.

We don't have to pretend we aren't tired.

We don't have to pretend waiting is easy.

We don't have to pretend the situation isn't urgent.

We simply refuse to allow urgency to become our shepherd.

Micro Surrender

Today, surrender the belief that because something feels urgent, you must take control of it.

Bring the situation to God honestly.

You can say, “Lord, I want You to move quickly.”

But then add:

“Until You move, I will keep following You.”

Urgency may describe your circumstances, but it does not have to determine your obedience.

Prayer

Father, You are my help and my Deliverer. When circumstances make me feel rushed, keep me from running ahead of You. Teach me to bring You my urgency without surrendering my obedience. Shepherd my thoughts, my decisions, and my responses today. I will depend on You even while I wait. In Jesus' name, amen.
