Don't Measure God by the Moment
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 73:1–28
Have you ever looked at someone else's life and wondered, “God, how is this fair?”
Asaph did.
Psalm 73 is startlingly honest. He watches arrogant and wicked people appear to prosper while his own pursuit of faithfulness seems costly. What he sees begins challenging what he believes.
He admits that his feet almost slipped.
Then something changes.
He enters the sanctuary of God, and his perspective shifts.
Notice that God doesn't immediately change Asaph's circumstances.
God changes Asaph's perspective.
What looked permanent was temporary. What looked desirable wasn't as secure as it appeared. And what Asaph feared he was missing could not compare with what he already possessed in God.
He eventually declares that although his flesh and heart may fail, God remains the strength of his heart and his portion forever.
That's a word worth carrying into a new month.
Don't measure God's faithfulness by one moment in time.
What you see today is real, but it isn't necessarily the whole story.
The Shepherd sees farther than the sheep.
Micro Surrender
Today, surrender the belief that what you currently see tells you everything you need to know about what God is doing.
Especially resist comparison.
Instead, pray:
“Lord, bring my perspective back into Your presence.”
You don't need someone else's portion when God Himself is yours.
Prayer
Father, when what I see confuses me, bring me back into Your presence. Guard me from comparison, envy, and conclusions formed without Your perspective. You are the strength of my heart and my portion. Help me trust You beyond this moment. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflect
What conclusion have I reached because of what I see that I need to reconsider in God's presence?
