Friday, September 11, 2026 — Psalm 56
Fear Is a Feeling, Not a Shepherd
by Torrie Slaughter
Anchor: Psalm 56:3–4
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
David does not say:
If I ever become afraid.
He says:
When.
That one word gives us permission to acknowledge something important.
Faith doesn't require the absence of fear.
David was seized by the Philistines in Gath. The danger wasn't imaginary. His nervous system wasn't responding to a hypothetical situation.
Yet David refuses to let fear become his leader.
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”
This matters in healing because sometimes the present awakens a response shaped by the past.
A conversation.
A tone of voice.
A conflict.
A feeling of rejection.
Suddenly fear arrives before we've even figured out why.
We don't need to shame ourselves for that response, nor should we automatically assume it proves something hidden about our past.
We can notice it.
And then choose who leads next.
Fear can tell me something feels unsafe.
Wisdom can help me evaluate it.
But Jehovah Rohi gets to lead me.
Today's Micro Surrender
When fear appears today, don't immediately fight it.
Name it:
“I am afraid of __________.”
Then finish David's sentence:
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”
Feeling fear and following fear are two different things.
Prayer
Lord, when fear rises, remind me that You are near. Teach me to acknowledge what I feel without allowing fear to lead me. Amen.
