God Is Still God
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 76:1–12
After a week of urgency, remembrance, injustice, comparison, silence, and waiting, Psalm 76 brings us somewhere important:
Awe.
The psalm celebrates God's power over those who appear powerful. Weapons are broken. Warriors are unable to stand. Human strength reaches its limit before the authority of God.
And the psalmist asks:
“Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused?”
Sometimes our problems become so large in our minds that God begins to appear small beside them.
Psalm 76 reverses the view.
Instead of examining God through the size of our circumstances, we examine our circumstances in light of the greatness of God.
The things frightening you have limits.
The season you're walking through has limits.
Human power has limits.
Your understanding has limits.
God does not.
And perhaps that is exactly where this week needed to bring us.
The Shepherd who has taught us to depend on Him is greater than the moment in which we're depending on Him.
So before rushing into another week, pause.
Worship.
Remember who God is.
There is more for us to learn about Him.
Micro Surrender
Today, surrender the tendency to magnify the problem until it becomes larger in your thoughts than God.
Name what concerns you.
Then intentionally turn your attention toward who God has revealed Himself to be.
Pray:
“Lord, restore my awe.”
Sometimes the next step of faith isn't figuring something out.
It's remembering how big God is.
Prayer
Father, restore my awe of You. When circumstances dominate my thoughts, remind me that nothing I face is greater than You. Quiet my heart, strengthen my trust, and prepare me to know You more deeply. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflect
What have I been magnifying that needs to become smaller in the light of who God is?
