God Is Still Writing the Story

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture Anchor:

“With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.” — Psalm 78:72

By the time we reach the end of Psalm 78, we have seen rebellion, consequences, loss, mercy, judgment, remembrance, and restoration.

If we stopped the story in the middle, we might assume everything had fallen apart.

But God wasn't finished.

The final verses turn toward David. God chooses a shepherd and brings him from tending sheep to shepherding His people.

Think about that.

Generations had failed. People had rebelled. Leaders had disappointed. Yet God's purpose continued moving.

That's one of the comforts of knowing El Olam.

We tend to evaluate God's work from whatever chapter we're currently living.

If the chapter hurts, we think something has gone wrong.

If we're waiting, we assume nothing is happening.

If something ends, we wonder whether God's purpose ended with it.

But the Everlasting God isn't limited to our chapter.

He was working before we arrived in this story, He is working in the portion we can presently see, and His purposes extend farther than our lifetime.

Psalm 78 doesn't excuse Israel's failures. It places them inside a story larger than their failures.

And ours are not the end of the story either.

God is still forming.
Still correcting.
Still redeeming.
Still leading.

You may not know what comes next.

But you know the One holding the story.

Heart Turn

Consider something in your life that feels unfinished.

Instead of demanding an ending today, pray over that unfinished place: “El Olam, help me trust You with the part of the story I cannot see yet.”

Then resist the temptation to write an ending God hasn't written.

Prayer

Everlasting God, You see the whole story while I see only a chapter. Forgive me for assuming that what I cannot understand must mean You are not working. Give me patience with unfinished places. Shepherd me with Your skillful hand and teach me to trust Your purposes beyond what I can presently see. Amen
