Psalm 23:1–6 — Living Worthy Means Following the Shepherd

There are few passages in Scripture more familiar than Psalm 23. Many of us can recite its opening words from memory:

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1)

Because these verses are so familiar, we can easily overlook how deeply they connect to our daily walk with Christ. Psalm 23 is not simply a comforting passage for difficult times or a favorite reading at funerals. It is a picture of what everyday life looks like for those who choose to follow the Good Shepherd.

As we continue our weekly theme, Living Worthy: Walking in the Righteousness of Jehovah Tsidkenu, today's Psalm reminds us that righteousness is not about finding the right path on our own—it is about following the One who already knows the way.

Notice what David does not say.

He doesn't say, "The Lord showed me the path."

He says,

"He leads me..."

There is a significant difference.

The Shepherd doesn't simply point us in the right direction and hope we find our way. He walks with us. He guides us. He corrects us. He protects us. Every step we take in righteousness begins by staying close to Him.

David continues,

"He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake." (Psalm 23:3)

What an incredible reminder of Jehovah Tsidkenu.

God leads us in righteous paths not because we have earned them, but because His name is faithful. His reputation is tied to His promises. The same God who declared us righteous through Christ is committed to leading us into a life that reflects His character.

Today's reading in Romans 13 beautifully echoes this truth. Paul urges believers to wake up from spiritual complacency because salvation is nearer than when we first believed. He writes,

"Put on the Lord Jesus Christ..." (Romans 13:14)

That phrase perfectly describes what it means to follow the Shepherd.

We don't merely admire Christ from a distance.

We put Him on.

His compassion becomes our compassion.

His humility becomes our humility.

His obedience becomes our example.

Every day becomes another opportunity to look more like the One who saved us.

Meanwhile, 2 Chronicles gives us a sobering contrast. King Uzziah began his reign with humility. He sought the Lord, listened to godly counsel, and experienced remarkable success. Yet success slowly became a greater test than hardship. Pride entered his heart, and he stepped outside the boundaries God had established, believing his accomplishments gave him permission to ignore God's instructions.

How often do we face the same temptation?

Sometimes we depend on God when life is difficult but quietly begin depending on ourselves once things improve.

Psalm 23 gently calls us back.

The Shepherd never intended His sheep to outgrow their need for Him.

Whether we are walking through green pastures or the valley of the shadow of death, His presence remains our greatest security.

Perhaps that's why David's confidence isn't found in peaceful circumstances but in the Shepherd Himself.

"For You are with me." (Psalm 23:4)

Those five words are enough.

The valley may still exist.

The enemies may still surround us.

The future may still feel uncertain.

But if the Shepherd is with us, we have everything we need.

Living worthy is not about living a perfect life. It is about living a surrendered life—one that continually follows the voice of the Shepherd above every other voice competing for our attention.

Today, pause and ask yourself: Whose voice has been leading my decisions?

The opinions of others?

My fears?

My ambitions?

Or the gentle voice of the Shepherd?

Jehovah Tsidkenu has not only made you righteous; He faithfully leads you in righteousness every single day. Stay close to Him. Trust His direction. Even when the road seems unfamiliar, you can be confident that the Shepherd never loses His sheep.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my faithful Shepherd. Thank You for never leaving me to navigate life alone. Forgive me for the times I have followed my own understanding instead of Your voice. Teach me to recognize Your leading and give me the courage to obey, even when I cannot see the entire path ahead. Lead me in the paths of righteousness for Your name's sake, and let my life reflect the character of Christ in all that I do. Thank You for walking beside me through every valley and for preparing a future filled with Your goodness and mercy. In Jesus' name, Amen.
