Psalm 22:1–18 — Living Worthy When God Seems Silent

There are moments in every believer's journey when faith is not tested by abundance but by silence. We pray, we wait, and we wonder why heaven seems so quiet. If you've ever asked, "God, where are You?" then you are not alone. David asked that very question in Psalm 22.

"My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?" (Psalm 22:1)

These opening words are among the most heartbreaking in all of Scripture. Yet they are also some of the most hope-filled because they remind us that God welcomes our honest prayers. David did not hide his anguish, and neither did Jesus, who quoted these very words from the cross. What appeared to be the darkest moment in history became the greatest display of God's righteousness and redeeming love.

As we continue our weekly theme, Living Worthy: Walking in the Righteousness of Jehovah Tsidkenu, today's Psalm reminds us that living worthy does not mean we will always understand God's ways. Sometimes living worthy means choosing to trust Him when His plan is beyond our understanding.

Today's readings beautifully reinforce this truth. In Romans 11, Paul marvels at the wisdom of God, declaring,

"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33)

There are seasons when we long for explanations, but God offers us something greater than explanations—His presence. His wisdom extends far beyond what our finite minds can comprehend.

In 2 Chronicles, Judah experiences the consequences of kings who abandoned the Lord. The nation suffers because people chose pride, compromise, and idolatry over obedience. Yet even in judgment, we see God's mercy. He continually raised up priests, prophets, and faithful leaders to call His people back. God's silence was never the absence of His care. His patience was an invitation to repentance and restoration.

Perhaps you find yourself in a similar place today. Maybe you've prayed for healing, reconciliation, direction, or provision, and the answer hasn't come as quickly as you hoped. The temptation is to believe that God's silence means He has forgotten you.

Psalm 22 reminds us otherwise.

David begins with questions, but he never stops praying. He continues to remember God's faithfulness to previous generations, recalling how Israel cried out and was delivered. Even before his circumstances changed, David anchored his heart in what he knew to be true about God's character.

That is what righteous living looks like.

Jehovah Tsidkenu has already declared you righteous through Christ. Your standing before God is not determined by your current feelings or circumstances. His righteousness is your firm foundation, even when your emotions feel unstable. Faith matures when we choose to stand on God's promises instead of our perceptions.

If today feels heavy, don't mistake God's silence for His absence. The cross teaches us that even when everything appeared lost, God was accomplishing His greatest victory. The same God who was working redemption then is still working in your life now.

So continue to pray. Continue to worship. Continue to trust.

The Shepherd has not abandoned His sheep, and the Righteous Judge has not forgotten His children. His timing is perfect, His purposes are good, and His faithfulness never fails.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for meeting me even in the moments when I struggle to understand what You are doing. Strengthen my faith when my emotions are weak and help me to trust Your character above my circumstances. Remind me that Your righteousness has secured my place in Your family and that Your silence never means You have abandoned me. Give me endurance to keep praying, courage to keep believing, and peace to rest in Your perfect wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
