Mercy Met Them Before They Understood

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture: Psalm 106:1–12

We have spent several days remembering God's faithfulness. Today, Psalm 106 invites us to consider the other side of the story: humanity's tendency to forget.

The psalm begins with praise because the LORD is good and His mercy endures forever.

Yet it quickly acknowledges Israel's sin and rebellion.

At the Red Sea, the people had witnessed God's mighty works in Egypt, but fear overtook their memory. Instead of trusting the LORD, they rebelled.

Nevertheless, God delivered them for His name's sake, revealing His mighty power.

Their rescue was not evidence of their perfect faith. It was a demonstration of His mercy and faithfulness.

Psalm 106:12 records that afterward they believed His words and sang His praise.

What a reminder that God's mercy is greater than our moments of fear, but His mercy should lead us toward deeper trust.

Jehovah Sabaoth is not powerless when His people panic. Yet neither should we mistake His patience for permission to remain unchanged.

As we close this first week, let gratitude lead us beyond simply celebrating what God has done.

Let it move us toward faithful obedience.

Reflection Question

Where has God shown me mercy despite my fear, impatience, or unbelief?

Prayer

Merciful Father, thank You for Your goodness and enduring mercy. Forgive me for allowing fear to overshadow Your faithfulness. Strengthen my trust and help me respond to Your Word with obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
