Psalm 40:1–10 — Peace Remembers What Waiting Tried to Make Me Forget

“I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.”

Psalm 40 begins on the other side of waiting.

David remembers the pit.

He remembers the mud.

He remembers crying.

But now he can also remember God turning toward him.

That is important.

The testimony isn't:

I figured out how to climb out.

It's:

He lifted me.

David's peace is rooted in remembering God's intervention.

And notice what God does next:

“He put a new song in my mouth…”

The experience that once produced crying eventually produces worship.

Not because the pit was good.

Because God was faithful in it.

How did God's peace meet David?

God's peace met David through remembered faithfulness.

David can look backward and recognize that the waiting period wasn't evidence that God had forgotten him.

God heard.

God turned.

God lifted.

God established.

And David remembered.

What if today's anxiety is making you forget yesterday's faithfulness?

Before asking God for something new, remember something old.

Name one pit He brought you from.

One prayer He answered.

One season He carried you through.

One place where you can now say:

“He lifted me.”

Peace grows when memory becomes worship.

Prayer

Jehovah Shalom, thank You for every place You have already carried me through. Forgive me when today's uncertainty causes me to forget yesterday's faithfulness. Strengthen my memory. Remind me of the pits You lifted me from and the places where You established my steps. Put a new song in my mouth so that my testimony strengthens someone else who is still waiting. In Jesus' name, amen.
