Praise Before the Circumstance Changes: Praise While You're Still Waiting

Psalm 69:19–36

Anchor Scripture:
“I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.” — Psalm 69:30

Something changes as Psalm 69 continues.

Not necessarily David's circumstances.

David's posture.

He has described reproach, shame, loneliness and heartbreak. He looked for sympathy and found none. He wanted comfort and found no one.

His words become difficult and intense as he cries for God's justice.

But eventually, David turns.

“But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!”

Notice that he is still afflicted.

Still in pain.

And then:

“I will praise the name of God with a song.”

The praise doesn't wait for a paragraph announcing that every problem has disappeared.

David praises while the story still contains pain.

That doesn't mean he enjoys what is happening.

It means his circumstances don't receive the authority to determine whether God remains worthy.

Sometimes we postpone worship.

“I'll praise when I understand.”

“I'll thank God when this changes.”

“I'll rejoice when the answer comes.”

But David shows us another possibility.

Praise can happen before resolution.

Not because we deny reality.

But because God's character is greater than the chapter we're currently living.

David eventually looks beyond himself. He speaks about the poor seeing and being glad, those who seek God taking heart, and God hearing the needy.

His perspective begins expanding again.

Pain had narrowed his vision.

Praise helps him look up.

Today's Micro Surrender

I surrender the demand to see resolution before I praise God.

Today, don't manufacture gratitude.

Find something true.

Something God has already done.

Something about His character that hasn't changed.

Something His Word has already promised.

Then praise Him there.

You can still have questions.

You can still be waiting.

You can still need an answer.

And you can still say:

“God, You are worthy.”

The unresolved circumstance doesn't get the final word.

Prayer

Father, I praise You even while some things remain unresolved. Keep my pain from becoming the only thing I can see. Turn my attention again toward who You are and teach my heart to praise while I wait. In Jesus' name, amen.
