Pray It Again

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture Anchor:

“Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved!” — Psalm 80:3

Three times Psalm 80 returns to essentially the same prayer:

Restore us.

Apparently, the psalmist didn't get nervous about repeating himself.

Neither should we.

Sometimes we believe mature prayer always needs fresh vocabulary. If we've already asked God for something, we wonder whether asking again demonstrates weak faith.

Psalm 80 shows us another possibility.

Repetition can be perseverance.

The people need restoration, and the psalmist keeps bringing that need before God. He isn't searching for a new source. He isn't changing gods because the answer hasn't come quickly enough.

He returns to the same God with the same need.

There is something beautiful about that when viewed through El Olam.

Our repeated prayer meets God's unchanging character.

Maybe you've prayed for restoration before.

Pray again.

Maybe you've asked God to heal something that still hurts.

Bring it again.

Maybe your prayer journal contains a request you've written so many times that you're tempted to skip over it.

Don't confuse waiting with abandonment.

The Everlasting God is not exhausted by your dependence.

Heart Turn

What prayer have you nearly stopped praying because you've been carrying it for so long?

Bring it before God again today—not frantically, but faithfully.

“Restore us, O God; let your face shine.”

Prayer

El Olam, I come again. You already know what I need, what I have asked, and how long I have waited. Keep disappointment from turning into distance. Restore what You desire to restore, correct what needs correcting, and teach me to persevere in prayer because You remain faithful. Let Your face shine upon me, and keep my heart turned toward You. Amen.
