Remember Who Has Kept You

Psalm 71:1–24

Sometimes the evidence we need for today's trouble is hidden in yesterday's testimony.

Psalm 71 is the prayer of someone who has walked with God long enough to look backward while asking Him for help moving forward.

The psalmist declares that God has been his hope and trust from his youth. He remembers God's faithfulness throughout his life, yet he is still facing circumstances that require him to depend on God again.

That is important.

Past faithfulness doesn't eliminate present dependence. It strengthens it.

Sometimes we think spiritual maturity should make us need God less. But maturity actually teaches us how deeply we have always needed Him.

The psalmist doesn't say, “God helped me before, so I can handle this one.”

He essentially says, “God, You have carried me before, so I know where to turn now.”

There may be situations in your life today that feel unfamiliar, but the God you are trusting is not unfamiliar.

You've seen His provision.

You've experienced His correction.

You've survived seasons you didn't know how you would survive.

You've watched Him make ways you couldn't manufacture.

So when fear begins telling you what might happen, let remembrance testify about what God has already done.

Micro Surrender

Today, surrender the belief that a new problem requires a new source of security.

Pause and remember one specific way God has sustained you before.

Then tell Him:

“Lord, You were faithful then, and I will trust You now.”

Your circumstances may have changed.

Your Shepherd has not.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being faithful throughout my life. When today's circumstances make me afraid of tomorrow, remind me of what You have already brought me through. Keep my hope anchored in You, and teach me to trust You again today. In Jesus' name, amen.
