When Everything Around Us Feels Uncertain

Have you ever noticed how quickly our circumstances can change?

One phone call, an unexpected diagnosis, a financial setback, or a difficult conversation can interrupt what we thought would be an ordinary day.

Suddenly, the plans we made seem uncertain, and our attention shifts toward everything we cannot control.

But Psalm 97 begins with a declaration that does not depend on our circumstances:

The LORD reigns.

The psalmist doesn't begin by explaining the world's problems or offering a strategy for avoiding hardship. Instead, he directs our attention to the One who rules over all creation.

God's reign is not interrupted by human uncertainty.

Psalm 97 celebrates His righteousness, justice, holiness, and supremacy over every false god. Psalm 98 continues this celebration, calling all creation to rejoice because the Lord has made His salvation known and comes to judge the earth with righteousness.

Together, these psalms remind us that God's authority is not merely something we acknowledge when life is comfortable.

It is the truth that steadies us when life becomes uncomfortable.

The Comfort of God's Authority

Sometimes we associate authority with restrictions or limitations. But when we understand God's character, His authority becomes a source of assurance.

He is not a careless ruler.

He is righteous in His judgments, faithful in His promises, and holy in all His ways.

This doesn't mean we will always understand what He allows or how He is working.

It means our inability to understand does not diminish His ability to reign.

As we conclude our month studying El Olam, the Everlasting God, we can rest in this truth:

The God who ruled before our circumstances changed is still reigning in the middle of them.

And He will continue reigning long after our present difficulties have passed.

A Moment to Reflect

What circumstance has occupied more of your attention than the truth that God reigns?

Today's Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that Your authority does not change with my circumstances. When uncertainty tempts me to become anxious, help me remember Your righteousness, faithfulness, and perfect wisdom. Teach me to trust Your reign even when I cannot understand Your ways. In Jesus' name, amen.

Today's Action

Before responding to something that troubles you today, pause and declare:

"The LORD reigns, and I can trust Him."

Then read Psalm 98:4–9 and notice how creation responds to the righteous King.

Remember: Our circumstances may change, but the King still reigns.
