Psalm 10:16–18
The King Who Never Left
by Torrie Slaughter
"The Lord is King forever and ever... Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear." — Psalm 10:16–17 (NKJV)
Yesterday, David gave us permission to ask one of the hardest questions a believer can wrestle with:
"Why do You stand afar off, O Lord?"
Perhaps you've asked that question yourself.
You prayed for healing, but the diagnosis remained the same.
You asked God to restore a relationship, yet the silence continued.
You sought direction, but the path ahead still seemed uncertain.
When life doesn't unfold the way we hoped, it's easy to conclude that God has stepped away. And once that thought settles into our hearts, we often begin trying to earn His attention. We pray harder, serve longer, and carry heavier burdens, believing that if we could simply do enough, God might finally respond.
But today's Psalm gently corrects that misunderstanding.
David reaches the closing verses of Psalm 10 with an entirely different perspective.
Notice what changed.
David doesn't tell us that every problem disappeared.
He doesn't say injustice suddenly ended or every prayer was answered overnight.
Instead, he remembers something far more important:
"The Lord is King forever and ever."
Everything else may feel uncertain, but God's reign is not.
He has not surrendered His throne.
He has not forgotten His children.
He has not become distracted by the chaos of this world.
The King who seemed distant at the beginning of the Psalm has been present all along.
Sometimes our circumstances cloud our vision, but they never change God's position.
David continues with another beautiful reminder:
"Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble."
Isn't that encouraging?
God doesn't only hear polished prayers.
He hears honest hearts.
He hears the quiet cry that never makes it into words.
He hears the exhausted believer who simply whispers, "Lord, help me."
He hears the one who feels overlooked, forgotten, or weary from carrying burdens alone.
Notice, too, that David says God prepares the heart of the humble.
That means God isn't only working around us—He is faithfully working within us.
Many times we pray for God to change our circumstances while He is lovingly preparing our hearts. His greatest work is often the transformation taking place inside us, shaping us to trust Him more deeply than we did before.
This is the beautiful assurance of Jehovah Tsidkenu—the Lord Our Righteousness.
Our confidence is not built upon how well we perform or how perfectly we pray. It is built upon the unchanging character of the King who has already made us right with Himself through Jesus Christ.
Because Christ has secured our relationship with the Father, we don't have to fight for His attention.
We already have His heart.
As you continue through this week, remember this truth whenever fear or uncertainty begins to rise.
The Lord is still King.
He still hears.
He is still preparing your heart.
And He is still working, even when you cannot yet see what He is doing.
The King who reigns forever has never left your side.
Today's Action Step
Take a few moments today to reflect on a situation where you've been tempted to believe God has forgotten you. Instead of focusing on what you cannot yet see, thank Him for three ways He has already proven His faithfulness in your life. Let those reminders strengthen your confidence that the King who has cared for you before is caring for you still.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that You are King forever. When my circumstances tempt me to believe You are distant, help me remember that Your throne has never been shaken and Your love has never changed. Thank You for hearing the cries of my heart, even when I struggle to find the right words. Prepare my heart to trust You more deeply, and teach me to rest in Your presence instead of striving to earn what You have already given through Jesus Christ. Thank You for being Jehovah Tsidkenu, my righteousness, my refuge, and my faithful King. Help me walk through this day with confidence, knowing You are near, You are working, and You will always remain faithful. In Jesus' name, Amen.
