Saturday, September 19 — Psalm 63

What Are You Really Thirsty For?

by Torrie Slaughter

The setting makes this psalm.

David is in the wilderness.

He knows physical thirst, scarcity, vulnerability and discomfort—and uses that experience to describe his longing for God.

“My soul thirsts for You.”

That raises an excellent weekend reflection because we often misidentify thirst.

We're restless, so we scroll.

Lonely, so we reach backward.

Uncomfortable, so we shop.

Discouraged, so we eat.

Uncertain, so we seek another opinion.

None of those things necessarily addresses what the soul actually wants.

David recognizes:

This thirst is for God.

Micro-surrender: Before reaching for relief, I will ask what my soul is actually thirsty for.

Standout thought:
You can keep drinking from things that were never designed to satisfy spiritual thirst.

Prayer:
God, teach me to recognize my thirst for You. Before I reach for substitutes, draw my attention back to Your presence. You satisfy my soul. Amen.
