Psalm 11:1–7

When Everything Around You Shakes

by Torrie Slaughter

"In the Lord I put my trust; how can you say to my soul, 'Flee as a bird to your mountain'?" — Psalm 11:1 (NKJV)

There are seasons in life when everything around us feels uncertain. Plans change unexpectedly. Relationships become strained. Finances tighten. Health reports bring difficult news. The future seems unclear, and before long, fear begins whispering that we should run, hide, or take matters into our own hands.

That is exactly the tension David captures in Psalm 11.

The voices around him are urging him to flee. "Run to the mountains," they say. "Protect yourself before everything falls apart." From a human perspective, their advice seems reasonable. After all, when the foundations appear to be crumbling, our instinct is often to find the quickest escape.

Yet David begins with a powerful declaration: "In the Lord I put my trust."

Before he addresses the crisis, he declares his confidence.

What a lesson for us.

Trust is not the absence of trouble. Trust is the decision to anchor your heart in God's character before you understand His plan.

David continues by asking, "If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3). It is a question that still echoes today. What do we do when our routines are disrupted, when culture shifts, when families struggle, or when life doesn't unfold the way we expected?

David answers that question not by looking around him, but by looking up.

"The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven." (Psalm 11:4)

Nothing about David's circumstances had changed, but everything changed when he remembered where God was.

God had not abandoned His throne.

He was not wringing His hands in uncertainty.

He was not surprised by the chaos.

He was still ruling with wisdom, justice, and perfect authority.

How often do we forget this?

When we begin believing that everything depends on us, we carry burdens we were never designed to bear. We try to control every outcome, anticipate every problem, and fix every situation. The result is exhaustion, anxiety, and a constant feeling that we must perform well enough to keep everything from falling apart.

But Psalm 11 gently reminds us that we are not holding the world together.

God is.

This is one of the beautiful truths revealed through Jehovah Tsidkenu—The Lord Our Righteousness. Because our standing before God is established through Christ, we no longer have to strive for control to feel secure. Our peace does not rest in our ability to manage every circumstance. It rests in the unchanging character of the One who reigns forever.

Faith is not pretending life is easy.

Faith is choosing to believe that God remains faithful when life is difficult.

Perhaps today your foundations feel shaken. Maybe you're carrying concerns about your family, your future, your ministry, or decisions you need to make. Instead of allowing fear to become the loudest voice in your heart, allow Psalm 11 to redirect your gaze.

The throne is still occupied.

The King is still reigning.

And the Lord who rules heaven is also watching over your life with perfect love and wisdom.

You don't have to hold everything together because God already does.

Today's Action Step

Take a piece of paper and write down one situation that has been causing you anxiety or making you feel like everything depends on you. Then, beneath it, write today's declaration: "The Lord is on His throne." Read it aloud several times throughout the day, allowing God's truth to quiet your heart.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that when my world feels uncertain, Your throne remains unshaken. Forgive me for the times I have tried to carry responsibilities You never asked me to bear. Teach me to trust You before I understand what You are doing. Help me release my need to control every outcome and rest in the confidence that You are faithful, just, and always present. Thank You, Jehovah Tsidkenu, that my security is not found in my performance but in the righteousness You have given through Jesus Christ. Strengthen my faith today so that I may walk in peace, knowing You are always on the throne. In Jesus' name, Amen.
