Scripture Reading: Psalm 89:1–13
Key Verse:
“I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.” — Psalm 89:1 (ESV)
Before the Circumstances, Remember His Character
There are seasons when praising God comes easily. The prayers have been answered, the doors have opened, and the evidence of His goodness seems to be everywhere.
But what happens when the circumstances change?
What happens when the answer hasn't come, the situation hasn't improved, and the promises of God seem distant from what we're experiencing?
Psalm 89 begins by directing our attention away from what is happening around us and toward the One who has always been faithful.
Ethan the Ezrahite opens this psalm with a declaration of God's steadfast love and faithfulness. Before we encounter the questions and sorrow that emerge later in the psalm, we hear a commitment to remember and proclaim who God is.
That order matters.
Ethan is not simply celebrating favorable circumstances. He is declaring the character of a God whose faithfulness extends beyond a single moment, generation, or human experience.
And as we continue reading Psalm 89 over the next several days, we will discover why this opening declaration is so important.
Faithfulness Is Who God Is
In verses 5–8, Ethan draws our attention to the heavens, the assembly of the holy ones, and the incomparable greatness of the Lord.
He asks a question that brings everything into perspective: Who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
The answer is no one.
God's faithfulness is not one characteristic among many that we can separate from His identity. He is faithful in all that He does.
Then, in verses 9–13, Ethan reminds us of God's authority over the raging sea and His power over creation.
Consider that imagery for a moment.
The sea may rage, but it does not outrank its Creator.
The waves may rise, but they are not beyond His authority.
And while these verses proclaim God's sovereign power rather than promising that every storm in our lives will immediately cease, they remind us that nothing we face makes Him less than who He is.
The presence of difficulty does not mean the absence of God's faithfulness.
This is where our understanding of El Olam, the Everlasting God, becomes especially meaningful.
God is not faithful simply because things are going well. His faithfulness is rooted in His eternal, unchanging character.
Remembering Is an Act of Faith
Sometimes we become so focused on what God has not yet done that we overlook what He has already revealed about Himself.
We begin measuring His goodness by the speed of an answer, His presence by the absence of trouble, or His love by how comfortable our circumstances feel.
But Psalm 89 invites us to use a different measure.
Rather than asking our circumstances to define God, we allow God's revealed character to shape how we understand our circumstances.
This does not mean denying disappointment, suppressing grief, or pretending we have no questions.
In fact, later in this very psalm, Ethan will bring painful questions before the Lord.
Yet he begins with remembrance.
Perhaps that is an invitation for us today.
Before rehearsing everything that is uncertain, remember what Scripture has already made certain about God.
His steadfast love is not temporary.
His faithfulness is not limited to one generation.
His authority is not diminished by human circumstances.
And His character does not change simply because our understanding is incomplete.
We may not always understand what God is doing, but we can continue learning to trust who He has revealed Himself to be.
Today's Reflection Question
When circumstances challenge your confidence in God, what truth about His character do you need to remember before allowing your emotions to determine what you believe?
Take a moment to consider whether you have been measuring God's faithfulness by His Word or by the outcome you were hoping to see.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the Everlasting God, whose steadfast love and faithfulness endure through every generation.
Forgive me for the moments when I have allowed my circumstances to speak louder than Your Word. Teach me to remember who You are, even when I cannot understand what You are doing.
Strengthen my confidence in Your character. Help me to worship You with sincerity, bring my questions to You with humility, and trust that Your faithfulness is not diminished by the difficulties I face.
May my life become a testimony of Your steadfast love, and may my words encourage others to know and trust You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Today's Purposeful Practice
Read Psalm 89:1–13 once more, slowly.
Write down one truth about God's character revealed in these verses. Then identify one circumstance in which you need to apply that truth.
Return to what you wrote throughout the day, especially when worry or uncertainty begins to compete for your attention.
Today's Refrain: God's faithfulness is not determined by my circumstances; it is established in His character.
Continue your journey tomorrow as we explore Psalm 89:14–37 and consider the relationship between God's righteousness, His covenant promises, and our confidence in His Word.
