Psalm 10:1–15

When God Feels Far Away

by Torrie Slaughter

"Why do You stand afar off, O Lord? Why do You hide in times of trouble?" — Psalm 10:1 (NKJV)

Have you ever found yourself wondering where God is?

Perhaps you didn't say the words aloud, but the question lingered quietly in your heart. You prayed, yet the answer didn't come. You remained faithful, but the struggle continued. You watched others celebrate breakthroughs while you continued waiting. Somewhere along the way, another thought crept in: Maybe if I prayed more...served more...or did something better, God would finally notice me.

That is one of the greatest traps of spiritual performance.

When God feels silent, we often assume the problem must be us.

We begin working harder instead of resting deeper. We convince ourselves that if we can become a little more disciplined, a little more faithful, or a little more spiritual, perhaps then God will respond. Before long, our relationship with Him becomes centered on earning His attention instead of trusting His heart.

David understands this struggle.

Psalm 10 opens with one of the most honest questions in all of Scripture:

"Why do You stand afar off, O Lord? Why do You hide in times of trouble?"

These are not the words of someone who has abandoned God. They are the words of someone who longs to see God move. David looks around and sees injustice flourishing. The wicked seem confident, the vulnerable appear forgotten, and God feels distant.

Have you ever felt that way?

The beauty of this Psalm is that David doesn't hide his questions. He doesn't pretend everything is fine. He brings his confusion directly to the Lord.

There is great comfort in knowing that God is not offended by honest prayers.

Our heavenly Father would rather hear the questions of a seeking heart than the silence of a distant one.

As the Psalm continues, David describes the arrogance of those who believe they answer to no one. They trust in their own strength, pursue their own desires, and ignore the needs of others. It is a sobering reminder that self-reliance always leads us away from God.

Yet hidden within David's lament is an invitation.

When life feels uncertain, we must choose where our confidence will rest.

Will we trust our own efforts?

Or will we trust the God who sees what we cannot?

This is where the beautiful truth of Jehovah Tsidkenu—the Lord Our Righteousness begins to reshape our hearts.

God never asked us to earn His attention.

He never required us to prove our worth before coming into His presence.

In fact, the Gospel tells us the exact opposite. Because of Jesus Christ, we are welcomed into God's presence not because we have performed well enough, but because Christ has made us righteous through His finished work on the cross.

That means when God feels distant, the answer is not to perform harder.

The answer is to draw nearer.

Bring Him your questions.

Bring Him your disappointment.

Bring Him your weariness.

Bring Him the places where you've wondered if you've somehow failed Him.

He already knows your heart, and He invites you to come just as you are.

Sometimes faith doesn't begin with having all the answers.

Sometimes faith begins by refusing to walk away when you don't.

As you read today's Psalm, don't be discouraged by David's questions. Instead, be encouraged by his example. He teaches us that honest faith is still faith. The God who seemed far away at the beginning of the Psalm will soon be declared King forever by the end of it. David's circumstances have not changed—but his perspective will.

Perhaps yours will too.

Today's Action Step

Spend a few quiet moments with the Lord today and be completely honest with Him. If there is an area of your life where you've wondered if He is distant or silent, tell Him. Don't try to impress Him with polished words. Simply bring Him your heart, trusting that He welcomes every sincere prayer. Then thank Him that your relationship with Him is secured by Christ's righteousness, not by your performance.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me to come before You with complete honesty. There are times when I don't understand what You are doing, and there are moments when You seem far away. Forgive me for believing that I must earn Your attention or prove my worth through my own efforts. Thank You for being Jehovah Tsidkenu, the Lord who has made me righteous through Jesus Christ. Help me to trust Your heart even when I cannot see Your hand. Give me the courage to bring You my questions, my fears, and my hopes, knowing that You are a loving Father who hears every sincere prayer. Strengthen my faith today, and remind me that Your silence is never the same as Your absence. I choose to draw near to You, resting in the grace You have so freely given. In Jesus' name, Amen.
